Anecdotes
This vessel was designed to break 6.5' of sea ice at 3 knots. In 1975 this vessel was stationed at Seattle WA USA. Her skipper, Captain John T. Howell, in 1985, made an East to West Transit of the Northwest Passage. In 1990 this vesselcompleted a westward passage of the Northwest Passage under Captain Joseph J. McCleland accompanied by CCGS Pierre Radisson. On 22 August 1994, Polar Sea was one of the first two North American surface vessels to reach the North Pole; this vesselsailed together with CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent.
