He was appointed as a Ensign USN. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (jg) USN. He was appointed as a Lieutenant USN. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander USN. He was appointed as a Commander in the US Coast Guard. In 1969 he commanded the USCGC Staten Island a United States Coast Guard icebreaker which made a west to east transit of the Northwest Passage while accompanying the oiltanker Manhattan. He retired as a Captain USCG.
