He was an ex-car dealer and motorcycle racer who took up sailing in 1946. In 1972 he began a three-year circumnavigation of the globe via Cape Horn. In 1976 as master of the ketch-rigged yacht Williwaw from the Netherlands in which he made an epic transit, East To West, of the Northwest Passage in one season. He circumnavigated North America in in 1977 in one season. He received the Bluewater Medal of the Cruising Club of America for his exploits. |
