He was a plumber at the time of his recruitment into the navy.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as an Assistant Steward RNCVR. He served in HMS Stephen Furness, an armed boarding steamer (former squadron supply vessel) that was torpedoed and sunk December 13, 1917 by the German submarine UB-64 in the Irish Sea.
