Biography
He spent his childhood in Regina, moving to Vancouver with his family in 1935. He attended King George High School there and studied for a year at the University of British Columbia. He was a well-known illustrator of naval vessels and a regular columnist in Crowsnest Magazine (The Naval Lore Corner) much enjoyed for many years - and republished as two books of the collected columns. An article in Crowsnest Magazine stated "Until recently an employee of a Vancouver finance company, Mr. Thornton was long unable to find suitable employment in his chosen field. He carried on his drawing as a hobby, from time to time contributing to periodicals on a freelance basis and doing posters and displays. The long wait came to an end just a few weeks ago when his talent was recognized by employment in the advertising and art department of a large department store in Vancouver."
 
Military Service
He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman (Officer Candidate UNTD) RCNVR 1944. He was appointed as an Able-Seaman RCNVR. In 1945 he went on active Service. (He was demobilized.) In 1954 he was appointed as a Direct Entry A/Lieutenant (SB) RCN(R). He was appointed as a Lieutenant (SB) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 07/06/1955). He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (SB) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 07/06/1963). He was appointed as a Commander (NR). He was appointed as a Captain (NR). He served in HMCS Discovery as Commanding Officer 1971-1975. (He was released 1975.)
