He served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. (Transferred to RNAS) He was appointed as a Probationary Flight Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RNAS. He was appointed as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant RNAS.

Anecdotes
Instructing at Cranwell, Clarence was killed when his Avro 540 hit a DeHavilland DH6 in a midair collision. Flight Cadet S.A. Scott, the DH6 instructor and student also died.
