Biography
He attended Lakefield School. After his naval service he was a well known ice-pilot and arctic navigator. He navigated several vessels through the Northwest Passage as ice-pilot including the Manhattan in 1969.

He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RCN 1936, (Special Entry No. 40). He was appointed as a Midshipman RCN. In 1937 he served in H.M.S. Shropshire for Training. He served in H.M.S. Sussex for Training. He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 01/05/1939). He served in H.M.S. Hotspur. He served in H.M.S. Hostile. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 01/05/1939). He was appointed as a Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 15/05/1940). He served in H.M.S. Excellent for RN Long Gunnery Course 1940. He served in the RCN Barracks Halifax at Gunnery School 1941. He served in HMCS Assiniboine. He served in HMCS Niobe as Executive Officer 1941. He served in HMCS Ottawa as Executive Officer 1941. In 1941-1942 he served in H.M.C.S. Ottawa . He served in HMCS Chaudiere as Executive Officer. On September 13, 1942 he survived the torpedoing and sinking of HMCS Ottawa (H.60) by the German submarine U-91.
