He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN (With seniority dated 31/08/1876). He was appointed as a Midshipman RN (With seniority dated 24/10/1878). He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 24/10/1882). He served in H.M.S. Decoy 1884 He served in. He served in H.M.S. Decoy while serving in engagements at Suakin in the Sudan in 1884. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 30/09/1885). He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 31/12/1902).In 1902 he served in HMAS Dart (In command). He was appointed as a Captain RN (Retired) (With seniority dated 30/06/1909). (He was re-activated for First World War service.) He served in HMCS Stadacona (For Special Service at Halifax as Senior Officer of Patrols) 1915. He served in HMCS Margaret (In command) (Additional for charge of St. Lawrence Patrol) 1915, (and Additional for recruiting duties at Sydney NS) 1916.
