(He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He went to sea in 1849 as an Apprentice in the brig Eston Nab. He served in transport in the Crimean War in 1854 and was present at the bombardment of Odessa and at Balaklava. He was present at the seige of Sebastapol. He arrived at Victoria in 1856 in the bark Agnes Garland. In 1857 he took command of the schooner Ino trading alomg the coast. In 1858 he owned and commanded the schooner Violet built at Pachena Bay by W. Banfield and Mr. Francis and put her into the coasting trade for passengers and freight. They carried passengers and freight to Fort Langley in 1858 during the gold rush. In 1859 he acted as Pilot and interpreter in H.M.S. Satellite on her voayage to Barkley Sound to investigate the seizure of the Swiss Boy. Later he commanded the Cadboro. He commanded the schooner Meg Merrilies in the Alberni Lumber trade from the sawmill there 1860-66. In 1862 he dropped a bag overboard, of $500 in gold coins, at Alberni, which was never recovered. In 1866 he commanded the steamer Isabel to 1868. He was appointed Pilot for the Victoria District in 1868-76. He commanded the HBC vessel Beaver in 1876 and the Sir James Douglas. He retired in Victoria BC in 1902. |
