In 1850 he apprenticed in the HBC bark Prince of Wales. In 1852 he transferred to the Otter for a voyage to the Pacific, arriving on the the coast in 1853. In July 1858 he was appointed as the first Marine Pilot in British Columbia, in spite of not being a Master Mariner. (The certificate was signed by Captain W.A. Prevost RN and Governor James Douglas). In 1861 he married the daughter of Robert Laing. In 1863 he returned to work with the Hudson's Bay Company. (He was retired in Victoria BC.) |
