(He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) In 1967 he was the Master of the CCGS John A. MacDonald, a Canadian icebreaker, in an east to west transit of the North West Passage in company with USCGC Northwind. They were beset in ice north of Point Barrow AK. They circumnavigated North America. In 1969 he made another east to west transit and then a return transit accompanying the tanker Manhattan. |
