He was the son of Dr. Eric Wellseley Boak.

In 1938 he served in HMS Excellent for Training. He served in HMCS Ottawa 1938. He was appointed as Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 01/07/1938). He was appointed as A/Lieutenant-Commander RCN 1943. He served in HMCS Skeena (In command) 1943. He served in HMCS Sioux (In command) 1944. He was appointed as A/Lieutenant-Commander RCN 1945.
